The South African 1 Ounce Gold Krugerrand
Since it was first produced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand has been one of the best-known gold bullion coins in the world. It’s minted by the Rand Refinery in Pretoria for the South African Mint using gold mined in South Africa. It was the first modern bullion coin, invented as a convenient way for individuals to buy and sell investment-grade gold. By 1980 the Krugerrand dominated the global gold coin market.
The name “Kruger” is from the former South African president Stephanus Johannes Paulus "Paul" Kruger, whose profile is depicted on the obverse side of the coin. “Rand” is the South African unit of currency. The reverse of the coin, designed by Coert Steynberg, shows the Springbok Antelope, the national symbol of South Africa.
The Krugerrand contains 1 troy ounce of gold and is of 22 karat fineness. It’s minted using “crown gold”, an alloy of gold and copper that makes for a more scratch-resistant coin. More than 54 million Krugerrands have been minted since July 3rd, 1967. With its extensive history and worldwide recognition, the Gold Krugerrand is a great option when you buy gold.
